For the 4th of July weekend, my family elected to vacation in the state of New York, which happens to be my dad’s home state. Yesterday, we were going to camp with my cousin on Lake Ontario, so on the way, we decided to stop at Walmart to pick up a few things before meeting up with him. While walking in, I saw the following sign below in a Spanish which says that Walmart is hiring. It made me think that some people don’t seem to realize that though it doesn’t designate it in our Constitution, English is our official language, and whenever you immigrate to a country, it doesn’t mean you have to completely disregard your original language and culture, but if you move to a country for the long term, you should learn its language out of courtesy to its citizens. For example, you can’t expect every American to know Spanish or every German to know Japanese or every Egyptian to know Thai. We don’t have to be mean, but we shouldn’t have to break our backs catering to immigrants, and immigrants who came here in the past reasonably assimilated. I suppose this sign just goes to show how much American society is placating the Hispanic one these days. Enjoy!
